To reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights …. To establish conditions upon which justice and respect … for the obligations welling from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained … To promote social progress and largest standards of life in larger freedom.”Treaty of Lisbon (Treaty on European Union – Article 3):“In its relations with the wider world, the Union shall uphold and promote its values and interests and contribute to the protection of its citizens.
